School Festivals

Our school festivals come in all shapes and sizes – all of which are available to you absolutely free. While our school festivals are primarily intended for high schools, a limited selection of films and resources is also available for elementary schools.

To help you understand the spectrum of school festival offerings, we’ve created a handy chart.

More detailed descriptions of each of these options can be found below the chart. If you have questions about which one is right for you, write to contactus@reelcanada.ca.

DVD LENDING LIBRARY

We encourage the use of Canadian film as a teaching tool. If you’re interested in showing a film to your class on a specific theme or subject and would like to borrow a DVD from our library as well as gaining access to any associated lesson plans that we have created, write to contactus@reelcanada.ca and browse different film catalogues (by language, theme or grade level) on our Film Catalogues page.

FOCUS FILM FESTIVAL

If you’d like to plan an event that is larger than just showing a film in your own classroom, we can help! We’ve created a festival planning kit to guide you through the steps of planning your own in-school film festival.

Whether it’s for a couple of classes in a large classroom or an entire school assembled in an auditorium, we provide step-by-step instructions, advice and ongoing logistical and planning support, as well as access to promotional materials, and our special “Festival Party Kit” full of games, quizzes and goodies for your students. As with all our offerings, our library of DVDs and lesson plans is free for you to access.

To start planning a Focus festival, browse the film options (by language, theme or grade level) on our Film Catalogues page and write to contactus@reelcanada.ca.

GALA FILM FESTIVAL

For a select number of schools across Canada each year, we offer the Gala model of our school festivals. This includes everything listed above, as well as more planning support, help securing equipment to enhance the event.

Because we value live engagement, we’re often able to provide trained facilitators for Gala events, who can introduce the films and lead discussions after the screenings.

We will also do our best to secure special guests such as filmmakers, stars or other industry professionals to participate in post-screening Q&As live or via Skype, though this is not something we can guarantee.

Schools will be eligible for Gala events based on a number of factors, including location, number of participating students, and support of the administration and/or teacher team, among others.

Please note that our Gala Full Service events require at least eight weeks of lead-time, for planning. Because of the amount of work involved, we can only do a very limited number of Gala events each year. If you’re interested in applying for a Gala festival for your school, please fill out the form below, and don’t forget to check out the movies you’ll be able to choose from on our Film Catalogues page.
